Discussion Topic - Mike Huckabee's Christmas Ad

Theocracy alert! OMG, Governor Huckabee is using the three corners of a bookcase to send the secret cross message.

Question: Have we become stupid? Without the cross the baby's birth is meaningless. I may not agree with Huckabee on immigration or on his poor understanding of Mormonism, but this commercial is not controversial.

I don't see it as controversial, but I wonder if it's necessary? I think it's sweet, and would be a nice thing for someone already in office to do...but a candidate? It feels a little like getting a Christmas card from a realtor. They may be a great person, but I still know that ultimately, they want my business.
That may not have been the direction you were heading with this discussion...

and p.s. - are people really alarmed about the "cross" in the back? Seriously?

The "cross" question comes from two different angles.

First, in political advertising, everything is controlled right down to each frame in order to "sell" the candidate. Nothing on the screen is there accidentally.

Second, the subliminal cross is seen as what really puts this cheesy ad finally over the top. He's supposed to be telling me why I should vote for him in a Republican primary. The only thing he's done in this ad is remind me about CHRIST and CHRISTmas and basically to remind us all that he's running on the Christ ticket. It's not that the cross imagery in the ad is objectionable, it's just icing on the cake. The reaction is, "Lord, it's not enough for him to rabbit on about the theology of Christmas, he even has to have some kind of cross floating off his shoulder! Dude, we get it, you're a Christian!"

Well, I totally see that, and I agree that every move is calculated - but this "cross" ...really? I would lean toward the belief that it happened accidentally and people in several camps - including Huckabee's, by leaving it in there - are exploiting it for their own purposes.

Exactly.

I do think it was intentional, but again, all is innocuous. Hey that sounds like a Christmas carol.

Silent night, Huckabee night,
all is calm
all is innocuous

Round yon bookcase,
halogen light,
brings in the votes you know...

How's that? Any idea for more stanzas?
